THE EMBER OF THE EAST

The Ember of the East belongs to the latter.

Carved from a naturally occurring quartzose stone in a rich reddish-brown and golden palette, the sculpture captures the unmistakable visual language of traditional East Asian ornamental carving. Its compact body is surrounded by curling forms and rhythmic details, while the expressive central face gives the creature an almost animated presence.

The stone itself becomes part of the artwork.

Its reddish-brown surface carries subtle variations of gold and amber, creating the impression of warmth beneath the polished exterior — as though a fragment of ancient earth had retained the memory of fire.

The carver has worked with this natural variation rather than attempting to conceal it. Every shift in colour becomes part of the composition, allowing the stone to contribute as much to the character of the piece as the carving itself.

There is something deliberately enigmatic about the creature.

It occupies that fascinating space found throughout ancient mythology, where creatures were imagined not simply as animals, but as symbols of forces greater than themselves — prosperity, fortune, abundance, transformation and the mysterious relationship between humanity and the natural world.

Its polished surface gives the sculpture a jewel-like quality, while the intricate carving transforms a modest fragment of stone into something with its own identity.
